Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre Presents AMANECER / Dawn
A Dazzling Celebration of Flamenco’s Power and Beauty
April 24-26
at the Luminary Arts Center
Minneapolis, MN — Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, under the artistic direction of Deborah Elias, proudly presents AMANECER / Dawn — a bold celebration of flamenco at its most powerful and transcendent.
This event features Grammy Award–winning dancer Nino de los Reyes, making his Minnesota debut following acclaimed appearances at the legendary Festival de Jerez. A current star on the international flamenco scene, de los Reyes is a master of rhythm and expression, bringing electrifying intensity and global prestige to the stage — and offering local audiences a rare chance to see a bailaor (male dancer) of this caliber. Joining him are charismatic virtuosos, guitarist Jose Manuel Alconchel, from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and singer El Yiyi, from Barcelona. Together, they form an indomitable collaboration that embodies the very soul of flamenco.
Sharing the stage is the powerhouse Zorongo Company, whose solos weave seamlessly together with lush ensemble works that showcase the full company’s precision and emotional depth. Deborah Elias will express joy in her solo Alegrías, dancing with the traditional bata de cola, a long-trained skirt that demands exceptional control and artistry. Molly Stoltz will share the rarely performed Petenera, with choreography inspired by Marco Flores. The company will premiere the compelling Soleá por Bulerías, choreographed by Nelida Tirado. The show will also feature the contemporary Les Dames en Bleu, choreographed by Fanny Ara and set to the inspiring music of guitar master Jose Luis de la Paz; and the driving Resilencia, choreographed by Omayra Amaya.
“Amanecer — Dawn — explores transformation: from darkness into light, struggle into triumph, winter into spring, dissolution into rebirth, realized through the visceral power of flamenco. This theme feels especially resonant as we emerge from a dark and painful winter,” says Artistic Director Deborah Elias. “It also reflects Zorongo’s own evolution, which is personally meaningful to me as I take on a new role as Resident Artistic Director. I feel deeply connected to this work, and as Artistic Director of Amanecer, I am thrilled to share it with audiences and invite them into the emotional depth, virtuosity, and transcendent artistry that define Zorongo’s legacy.”
